8 Different Types of Metal Finishing

If we are an artist or a technician, we know a lot about metal finishing because it is integral to our job. But for the sake of those are not familiar with these things. Here is a brief explanation. The aforementioned jobs use these things for various reasons. It is widely used to handle the exterior side of any metal products through a thin complementary layer on its surface. Aside from that, it serves also as a decorative material to the steel and a shield to prevent corrosion in the future.

There are numerous kinds of metal finishing methods which is useful for an assortment of functions. On this article, we will enumerate all the usual types of these processes together with their best examples.

So here are brief explanations of the different kinds of metal finishing.

  • Metal Plating

It is a procedure wherein a machine uses a chemical bath to cover or modify the exterior of a substrate with a thin layer of metal which includes nickel or Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). By metal plating an object, it improves its stability, corrosion endurance, surface friction and exterior presence.

  • Brushed Metal

In contrast with plating, this method is effective for the removal of any surface flaws and imperfections on the metal. The machine used in this process creates an even, matching grain façade on its texture for a product’s sleek interior. We can apply some metallic finish spray paint to add colour on the material.

  • Buff Polishing

We can expect a smooth, non-textured finish on our project if we use this process. The buff polishing machine uses a cloth wheel to stuff the product’s surface which can result in a high, glossy sheen outcome. It is typically done for ornamental products due to its decorative metal finishing.

  • Metal Grinding

A technique used to add abrasion, friction and/or density to smooth out a product’s surface. There are numerous types of grinding machines that are made depending on the level of its needed sleekness.

  • Metal Vibratory Finishing

The MVF equipment is operated to banish and remove the sharp edges of a material. The item will put inside a drum with lots of abrasive pellets and a substrate and then they apply a dipping vibration to for a uniform random surface.

  • Sand Blasting

Also known as bead blasting, Sand Blasting machines are into finishing projects that requires a uniform non-glossy texture. The common result of this is a smooth, neat product most especially in soft metals.

  • Powder Coating

It applies some design finish like that of a metal paint in Singapore but with greater sturdiness. The process includes the dissolving of dry synthetic powder to the metal for a glossy & matte coating.

  • Hot Blackening

The apparatus lays out a thin coating of black oxide to the surface resulting to a jet black finish with high abrasion appearance.

We hope we were able to distinguish each and every kinds of metal finishing that can be useful for your future reference.
