Simple Ways on How to Detect and Prevent Gas Leaks At Home

We always believe that our own home should be the safest spot in the world for us. It is the place wherein we can secure ourselves from any harm and danger from outside forces. Sadly, this is not true most of the time. Threats and hazards will be present even if we do not want it. Unfortunately, our home is relatively vulnerable in such events that we can’t totally control.

One big problem that we kept unnoticed every time is when we can’t observe abnormal substances with the air we breathe not unless if we were able to smell or felt something unusual with the atmosphere. Gas Leaks are the best example of this “silent killer”.

Gas leaks are the usual effects of poor, faulty, outdated and incorrectly installed appliances such as cookers and boilers. If we overlooked this instances, the chances of bad consequences will be huge that includes carbon monoxide poisoning, fire and explosions among others. As we are now more informed about the several risks, it is essential nowadays to invest in gas leak detection equipment to personally monitor the situation and to further safeguard our family and home.

But for those who can’t afford yet to purchase a gas detector soon, here are some simple signs and ways to identify these untoward circumstances.

  • When there is a sudden sickness in our body in which we are feeling dizzy or groggy without any major reason but once we went outside our house, we became better again.

  • If we can observe more condensation from the usual when we are looking at our windows.

  • Make an experiment wherein we need to move our gas tanks to a more ventilated area. Afterwards, mix a tablespoon of dish soap into a water container, open and pressurize the tank and wet down the suspected leak areas with the soap solution. If we notice some bubble formation then there is a legit leak.

  • If we saw the gas rings on our cooker are turning into colour orange or yellow than its usual crisp blue appearance.

Now that we have an overview on how to detect those scary drips from our tanks and appliances even without the assistance of a gas leak detector, we should also be equipped with the knowledge on how to prevent this from happening again. Here are some tips to prevent gas leaks:

  • Seek an advice from a registered Gas Safe Engineer to certify that all appliances and gas tanks at home are on good condition. Maintenance is required for the machines which are declared unsafe for the household.

  • If living in a condominium or residential compound, review all gas safety documents of the building and verify if it is up to date.

  • Check for the warranty and wear of tear of the appliances and make sure that they are being regularly serviced.

  • Install a carbon monoxide alarm within the house premises.
